EDUCATION

Arts + Public Life Education offers in-depth arts programming to Chicago South Side youth cultivating creativity, social development, and leadership while inspiring them to find and create their places in the world.

ARTS + PUBLIC LIFE YOUTH EDUCATION CORE PROGRAMS:

The Design Apprenticeship Program I & II (DAP) is a design-based mentorship and skills-building initiative that encourages teens and young adults to invest in the improvement of the physical and social conditions of their community.

The Community Actors Program (CAP) is an introductory performance program utilizing Theater of the Oppressed, participatory theater, and performance as tools for community building and social change.

The Teen Arts Council (TAC) is an introductory experience to arts administration for young people. Intentionally open-ended, participants engage in a variety of experiences and activations that support community based arts and culture.

The Back Stage Production (BSP) is designed to give South Side Chicago youth an introduction to the fundamentals of theater production while giving them hands-on experience in audio and lighting design, sound engineering, and stage management.

PEDAGOGICAL VALUES

APL’s Youth Education Department offers four programs in Design, Theater, Theater Production, and Arts Leadership for teens ages 14-21, and takes an integrated, process-based approach to community engagement: local teens share authorship over projects informed by their expertise as South Side residents and that have direct impact on their communities. Teens often participate in multiple sessions of the same program, or multiple program areas across APL. Especially engaged teens have also been hired as interns, teaching assistants, and more.

  • What Students Are Saying

“I loved my peers! I made so many beautiful friends who appreciate art as much as I do! “

    - Mikalah T (TAC)

  • What Students Are Saying

“My favorite part is working on our own projects, having conversation with lighting designers, set designers etc. and talking with my program whether it's educational or real life problems. “

    - Keonna A (BSP)

  • What Students Are Saying

”The best part of participating in CAP was definitely watching and listening to other people act. It helped me become inspired and gain insight on how others interpret text to make a play meaningful, which in turn makes me more skillful as an actress. CAP helped me learn how to research opportunities all around and how to work as a team. Figuring out how to compromise and build a consensus requires patience, which I earned from being in this program.”

    - Jada W. (CAP)

  • What Students Are Saying

“It was something new I never did before . I had a lot of ups and downs but Nathan was there the whole time. That’s the other thing I enjoy. If I needed help someone was always going to be there. “

    - Nyasia S (DAP)
