All that Light: Works Detail

Curator’s Notes

Yaw Agyeman is primarily known as a vocalist and performance artist. The photographs and short films offered in this exhibition demonstrate Agyeman's facility as a maker of still and moving images. These arresting photographs of his children call back to Amiri Baraka and Billy Abernathy's hybrid poetry collection and photo essay, In Our Terribleness: Some Elements and Meaning in Black Style. photographed in Chicago depicted everyday images of Black men, women and children. The children were depicted lovingly despite the often harsh urban backdrops in which they were depicted. The light in the eyes of his daughter and son suggests the hope for the future that Agyeman sees in them.
