Arts + Public Life:
Relationships, Engagement and Cultural Stewardship on Chicago’s South Side
CHST 20500 Chicago Studies, Spring 2025
Fridays on the Arts Block: 9:30am - 12:20pm
Founded in 2011 and located in Chicago’s legendary Washington Park neighborhood, Arts + Public Life (APL) is a dynamic hub of exploration, expression, and exchange that fosters neighborhood vibrancy through the arts on the South Side of Chicago. This class gives students an opportunity to learn from APL’s embedded practice of supporting the arts and cultural history of the South Side of Chicago to learn how they might become responsible and responsive stewards of this work themselves.
Each week students will be immersed into a different aspect of APL’s robust portfolio, all of which center relationships, community engagement, and cultural stewardship. Readings and visitors will provide background, inspiration, and know-how about APL’s cultural production processes and location in Washington Park. Students will engage with APL team members to refine their own project ideas throughout the quarter. Class will primarily take place in Arts + Public Life spaces on the Arts Block in the Washington Park neighborhood. Consent is required to enroll in this course. Interested students should email the instructor, Nootan Bharani, nbharani@uchicago.edu, to briefly explain their interest, however no previous experience is necessary.
Why should I consider this course?
This course will take you out of the classroom and provide opportunities to explore Washington Park, one of several Chicago neighborhoods that are home to the University of Chicago. You will learn directly from the APL team - people working in cultural production and arts administration - doing the work that has made Arts + Public Life a key piece of cultural and social infrastructure on the South Side for over a decade. Your final class project, a proposal for a cultural program or production, will be a chance to build on your vision for the arts in community.
What will we do in a typical session?
Course sessions will include case study presentations and workshops about how to bring forward cultural offerings such as exhibitions, residencies, youth arts education, arts marketplaces, cultural stewardship programming and more. Sessions will also include reflection time about readings and media regarding Washington Park, a field trip or visits from artists, and work time for final projects.
