Home Movies for the Holidays Opening Reception

Celebrate the holidays on the Arts Block!

Experience the holiday magic of the past with memorable home movies from the South Side Home Movie Projects archive, all set to a new mix entitled “Cold, Cool, Outta Sight,by DJ TREW from Miyagi Records. View the films from the sidewalk at the L1 Retail Store and Miyagi Records and step inside to pick up the soundtrack too.

DJ TREW attempts to capture the dichotomy of the winter experience - a barren, cold and peaceful landscape countered by overflowing, warm, and excitable humans - as well as the moments of anticipation, connection, and overall whimsy we find during the holidays.

Miyagi Records will host an opening reception on December 1st from 5:30-8:30 pm with drinks, snacks and sample items from the L1 store. Don't forget that L1 is open until 7pm for your holiday shopping needs.

The films will be on view from Dec 1st – Dec 30th at L1 and from Dec 1 – Jan 15 at Miyagi Records.

See you at the opening reception!

DJ TREW (aka Nigel Ridgeway) Co-owner of Miyagi Records, DJ TREW’s love for performing began in grade school when using two tape decks to spin basement parties. His main aim is to weave a common thread through seemingly disparate genres. Drawing inspiration from the early 1980s NYC art/music world, he believes no genre is off limits, no collaboration too outlandish.

Miyagi Records, located just a few steps to the west of L1 on the Arts Block, is a record dealer specializing in obscure and classic - Soul, Funk, Jazz, Latin, Rock, Blues, World Music, New Wave / Industrial, Hip-Hop, Disco, House LP, 12inch single, & 45rpm formats. As a BIPOC-owned store, they serve the diverse Southside community by showcasing the vibrant musical legacy of Chicago’s Southside and by offering patrons high quality customer service and fair prices.

South Side Home Movie Project at Arts + Public Life is a research and archival initiative to collect, preserve, digitize, exhibit and research small-gauge home movies made by residents of Chicago’s South Side neighborhoods. Bringing materials that are typically kept in private collections into public discussion, SSHMP is building an alternative, accessible visual record, filling gaps in existing histories, and ensuring that the diverse experiences and perspectives of South Siders will be available to larger audiences and to future generations.

This year’s Home Movies for the Holiday’s presentation includes film clips from the following South Side Home Movie Project Collections: Nicholas Osborne Collection, Jay Kavanaugh Collection, Alphonse and Nancie Teer Ellis Collection, James E. Taylor Collection, Dr. Helen Nash Collection, Dr. Homer Nash Jr. Collection, Levy-Gunansky Family Collection, David D. and Margaret T. Pitts Collection, Dr. George Reed Jr. Collection, Yosh Nakazawa Collection, Roberts Family Collection, Jean Patton Collection, Alsup Smith Family Collection, Gustina Steele Collection, Ramon Williams Collection, O’Neal Family Collection and Lynette Frazier Collection.
