Juneteenth Committed Knitters

  • The Arts Lawn 335 East Garfield Boulevard Chicago, IL, 60637 United States (map)

Join us for a fun-filled knit-fest with the Committed Knitters on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, from 11 am to 3 pm at Arts Lawn, 337 E Garfield Blvd. The event is being held to celebrate Juneteenth and is open to all. You will have the opportunity to craft, learn knitting and crocheting, and connect with other knitting enthusiasts. Newcomers and skilled stitchers are welcome.

The event is free, and you'll get to enjoy snacks, drinks, and special giveaways. Free yarn and needles will be provided.

Founded in 2008, the Committed Knitters meet weekly to create knitted or crocheted items for personal use and to donate to local and international groups, from earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria to migrant communities in Chicago. They are currently making baby items for the Marillac St. Vincent Project Hope's Doula Program. Pre-pandemic, they taught inmates at Cook County jail and mailed their creations to their families, among other projects. Their work was recognized by Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson in 2023.

This special event is made possible with the support of Arts + Public Life and the University of Chicago Office of the Provost.

*For APL events on the Arts Lawn, restrooms are available inside the Green Line Performing Arts Center.
